This fundamental difference in audience is why we support two communities,. If you'd like to view their content together, click. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc. This is what seals the deal for me. Displaymate give a good explanation of JNCD numbers which put things into perspective.
If the level of colour accuracy is down to the point where discrepancies are impercievable, then aside from a pissing contest over meaningless figures obtained in laboratory conditions, I don't see how it really matters anymore, even when considered as a standalone factor. When the additional tangible benefits are taken into account, then it sways a long way towards OLED for me.
Considering the image as a whole, and not worrying about numbers, a well calibrated OLED with its amazing contrast is going to look fantastic. And as I've said before, there is no way Apple are going to adopt OLED unless they can be sure that it allows them to deliver a phone which at least meets or even exceeds people's high expectations. Issues like burn in or noticeably inferior colour will be totally unacceptable to them.
I understand why people are sceptical. OLED used to be a shitshow even a few years ago. But If anyone is still on the fence, take a trip to a department store and take a look at an LG OLED TV next to an equivalent high end Samsung or Sony. There's a reason why people buy them despite the enormous price difference. According to Displaymate, at the time of its release the Note 7 had the best Performing Smartphone Display ever, with excellent colour gamut and overall performance.
Shortly after, the iPhone 7 display was then rated the best performing mobile LCD display they had ever tested. I have a 7 Plus and a Pro 9.7. Both have incredible displays, but I personally prefer OLED for the contrast and colours. While it may not be as technically accurate as LCD, the scales of measurement involved are showing discrepancies in accuracy at levels which aren't really perceivable to a normal user - and your comment that it is more than enough for most consumers is true.
It is just a phone. If there are people who need perfection then that's fine, but those users are in the minority, and I'm sure would be outnumbered by those who want an aesthetically pleasing display. Perfect colour does not necessarily result in an image which is most pleasing to the eye. I paid a significant uplift for a specific monitor which just happened to be calibrated. When running in that profile the colours are clearly accurate, but the image wouldn't turn heads. If Apple ever move to OLED, you can bet that any of the concerns which people have would have been addressed. They are inherently different technology, have you heard the expression 'you can put lipstick on a pig' LCD is superior for:.
1) white backgrounds as at 100% APL LCD will use less energy than AMOLED. 2) Static displays such as airports, bars, or anywhere that content will be static or have similar content 24/7 Current AMOLED on the other hand is better at LCD in almost every way. 1) Less power used at 60% APL and lower.
Most mixed content like video games, TV, movies is well below 50% APL so it will use less power. 2) No backlight so you can display information without having to turn on the entire display. 3) INFINITE contrast. The black levels are zero, contrast is better on AMOLED, period, there is no argument.
4) Better viewing angles. 5) Works with polarized sun glasses. LCD technology is damn good, probably as good as its going to get. AMOLED on the other hand is still getting better every year it gets brighter and more power efficient, it is the best display technology you can buy right now and for the next couple of years (something new could always come out). I made a video comparing AMOLED vs Apple LCD technology but unfortunately if you view it on a LCD its hard to tell the difference (due to higher blacklight levels).
