A year ago, Nik Bhatt, founder of and a former lead developer for Apple's Aperture and iPhoto team, released, an. Today, a year after its initial launch, RAW Power 2.0 has been released and with it comes updated adjustment tools, batch editing, and more. RAW Power for Mac 2.0 RAW Power for Mac 2.0 operates as both a standalone app, as well as an extension for Apple Photos. The updated version brings new adjustment tools including chromatic aberration correction, perspective correction, a black and white mode, a vignette tool, and a new enhance module.
Batch processing has also been adding. Now, users can apply filters and adjustments in bulk and copy edits from one photo to another. A new custom naming tool has been added for better organization upon exporting photos. RAW Power for Mac 2.0 has also received a few UI tweaks. It now includes a full file browser, multiple window and tab support, a thumbnail grid view, Quick Look support, improved metadata information, and a new dark look to go along with maxO Mojave's Dark Mode.
RAW Power for Mac 2.0 works with macOS High Sierra and Mojave. It retails for $29.99 as a one-time purchase, but Gentleman Coders is currently offering it for $26.99 throughout the month of November. Version 2.0 is a free update for existing RAW Power for Mac 1.0 users.
RAW Power for iOS 2.0 RAW Power for iOS 2.0 claims to be 'the first app to combine Raw image editing with seamless iOS and iCloud library integration.' Like its macOS counterpart, this update brings along the same new adjustment tools (some of which are hidden behind a $1.99 in-app purchase) including chromatic aberration correction, perspective correction, a black and white mode, a vignette tool, and a new enhance module. Gentleman Coders says these adjustments are 100 percent compatible with the macOS version and will sync through iCloud Photo Library if you have it enabled. Batch processing is also present in the iOS version.
Users can now 'apply presets, paste adjustments, revert to original, and generate JPEG previews for Raw photos for multiple images at a time.' The UI has also been updated across the board, including a customizable adjustment panel and a new option to share and export directly to the Photos app in various formats. RAW Power for iOS 2.0 is available for $2.99 in the iOS App Store with two optional in-app purchases for $1.99: Advanced Adjustment Pack 1 and 2.
Advanced Adjustment Pack 1 includes Depth Effect, Curves, and white balance adjustments. Advanced Adjustment Pack 2, a new pack for version 2.0 of the app, includes chromatic aberration, vignette, perspective, and black and white adjustments. RAW Power for iOS 2.0 supports iOS 11 and 12 and 'does not support iPhone 5s, 6, or 6 Plus, or iPad mini 3 or earlier.' I've done a comparison by editing the same file in DxO (version 11, I haven't upgraded to the DxO Labs version).
First, I still mourn the demise of Aperture. But not because of its RAW editing (except for the curves tool), but because of its organizing capabilities. DxO's presets for your camera and the lens correction tools makes for a cleaner base to start editing on. With RAW Power, the basic setting need far more adjustments to get to a satisfactory result. DxO's presets are too saturated for my taste, RAW Power makes it is bit more palpable. The RAW Power interface is very alike to Aperture, but I'm so accustomed to DxO that I can finish editing quicker in DxO. In the end, DxO's sharpening and the way it treats the RAW file are more to my taste than RAW Power (or Lightroom).
The end result is much 'cleaner' where both Lightroom and RAW Power often make me think there is a 'haze' over the image (for lack of better words to express something which is taste). @tarauS 'totally meaningless' or just a 'bit' meaningless? That is to say I can see.some. meaning in it can you not, though I do concede it's not what you'd call clear? 'Twas an off the cuff quickly written insufficiently considered note and I agree a little clarification wouldn't go amiss, but 'totally' without meaning?
I'm not convinced that's entirely accurate whether approached from either a logical or lexical semantic position. Now if you'd said 'stoatally' meaningless I would have agreed it has to do with neither Stoat nor Weasel in toto, though a point could be stretched to the use of the idiom 'weasel see' ( as argot of 'we will see'). Perhaps I digress: consider the Lily. I downloaded the trial version for Mac and after playing with it for just a few minutes I was about to buy it - yes, liked it that much. Then after zooming into a edit to check the effect of the sharpening I hit cmd-0 to return zoom to normal and my Mac. locked up solid: no cursor, no response to mouse or keyboard, fixed only by killing the power.
Maybe the next minor version will fix it. But I won't hold my breath.: iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015), 3.1GHz Core i5 8GB RAM 1TB SSD, High Sierra.
Update: while there is no option to disable the GPU (as there is in Adobe products) there is an option to switch from the default 'Automatic' to either 'Metal' or 'OpenGL', the latter described as being for 'older Macs'. Now I don't know whether or not my late-2015 Mac is an 'older Mac' but switching to OpenGL has made the app much smoother and so far there have been no further crashes. I really do like the simple operation of the app and the results it produces with very little effort, and although it is not going to replace Lightroom anytime soon it's really nice to have a lightweight option to use on my old Macbook Air if that's what I have with me - I have Lightroom on it.
But it really struggles and is an overkill anyway. Oddly enough the new iOS version is smoother and quicker on my iPad than the MacOS version is on the much more powerful iMac. The old iOS one was a bit too basic but v.2 is very usable. I think history has proven you wrong about app developers making more money with a single standalone price in the AppStore. That’s why they do it this way. Most people want to be able to try it and see if they like it and then pay.
That’s why pay up front apps are dying out. Also this way you can unlock just the features you want within one app, so the developer doesn’t have to worry about supporting mutiple versions. So rather than a lite version and a full version (which you’d have pay full price for again if you wanted to move up) you can just unlock the additional functionality.
Switching apps is also a pain because you have move settings, passwords, and files to the new app. Adobe charges you a monthly fee for Gaussian blur.talk about nickel and dimeing. But even Adobe charges you if you have photoshop express but want to unlock the full power of photoshop. Capture one has express (insert brand), pro (insert brand), and pro full, each step you pay more to unlock more functionality (oh you want layers, tethering, or support for multiple brands raw?.
You don’t even need to download a new version, just click a menu function in the program, pay your money and voila you have more functionality. Seems like a similar model. Is there stereo mastering software for mac. Many companies give you a cheap base product and then charge you if you want more features. Topaz gives you there base product and the you can pay to unlock pro modules that you want. Many people wouldn’t want to pay for all of them.
