We have so many favorite books and enjoy reading books from different cultures in addition to American classics. For World Book Day, I wanted to celebrate a solid family favorite, the Maclary series by New Zealand author. This series follows the adventures of Hairy Maclary, an adventurous and curious dog, and the other animals in his neighborhood. Written in musical prose, the books are fun to read (over and over again in my case). The series was started 35 years ago but feels timeless in its theme and prose. They are a fantastic fun with toddlers. 22 months loves interacting with the various characters in the book by finding them, copying their noises and laughing at their antics.

5 enjoys returning to the books, especially reading them with his brother. We were introduced to these books on a visit to the Scottish island of Tiree. Our friends had recently moved to this remote island and we went to visit when Mr. 5 was a toddler. Our friends bought Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy as a welcome gift for him and the rest is history. We immediately went to the island’s gift shop to buy 2 more Hairy Maclary adventures. A few months later we moved to Boston and noticed that the series isn’t mainstream here.
