I finally broke down and got one. It was nice when I didn't have to remove the card from the camera though. My computer recognized the camera and downloaded jpg's fine, but when I started shooting RAW, I couldn't get it to work. I do think there is a way to do it, but it just wasn't worth tinkering with different ideas any more. You can call Canon support, and you might get somebody who knows how to make it work on your system.
My granddaughter had a nifty little card reader, so I borrowed hers and liked it, then ordered one from Dell. It is a Belkin and has four card slots. How make a driver for this camara??? Well making a driver is quite complicated, and would still be too complicated for most, even if Canon was so kind to release the specifications for camera-communication.
I recommend you get gphoto2 to work with your camera instead. I'll try to help. First of all, gphoto2 is actually just libgphoto2, you'll need a frontend to use it, like digikam, gtkam, gthumb or any other app that uses libgphoto2. Secondly, libgphoto2 uses PTP to communicate with the 20d, so set the 20d to use PTP. Connect the camera, turn it on and start your favourite camera application and if everything went well, you should be able to import your pictures now. Now if it didn't work: If you are using Linux, which I'm guessing you are, connect the camera to the computer and turn it on. Once that is done, open a terminal and type 'dmesg', if your computer is correctly configured you should see something like: usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehcihcd and address 2 in there.
If that appeared, do the steps I mentioned above, but as root, as this is probably just a privileage problem. If it did not appear, try a 'modprobe ehci-hcd' and start over again. If it still doesn't work, get help from someone else, as I'm not going to explain how to compile and kernel or configure hotplug/udev on a dpreview forum:). Canon released a Software Developer's Kit that should have at least some functionality with the 20D. I've installed the Windows one for the 10D and it's interesting, but I couldn't get the info I wanted from the camera. (was looking to make a simple app that grabbed the shutter actuations, but couldn't find the data strings anywhere.
My guess is they're obscurely named. My guess is Canon purposely hides these so that the resale price of their cameras stay high. It's hard to devalue something when you can't read the mileage. Yes, I wear a tinfoil hat. Anyway, there's an SDK for Mac OS X written in C that you should be able to hack up a bit to work with Linux instead of Mac's pimped BSD kernel.
