And teams are pleased to announce a new release of MadMapper 1.3, a special promotional video highlighting the MadLight feature included in MadMapper 1.3 and the availability of MadMapper 1.4 BETA. MadMapper 1.3 released MadMapper 1.3 brings the addition of the highly anticipated MadLight feature. Now the power of simple, fast and intuitive video mapping is extended to the realm of lighting design! Easily integrate the control of light into your mapping projects so your video and lighting work together for a more immersive experience. MadLight communicates to lighting with the help of ArtNET, a widely accepted protocol for controlling stage devices.
ArtNET data is converted to DMX, so you can integrate MadLight into your existing stage productions. Once your computer is connected to the DMX light chain, you can create a DMX fixture from the creation tab, and select an area of your video that you want to use as a light source. The pixels within the defined area are then converted into data that control the color and intensity of the light. And, will be conducting a video mapping workshop at, from November 28th through the 29th, 2012. This two day workshop will focus on the technique of mapping video to physical surfaces in conjunction with other live video tools.

Doing successful mapping projects is not just about learning software. There are many other aspects to consider, such as sculpture, spacial relationships, color and composition. We hope to share with you some of ideas and experiences so you can gain a deeper understanding of the process of video mapping. We have also noticed that most successful mapping projects are a result of collaborations.
The forming of collaborations comes about through communities and people working together. We hope that you will not only learn new skills, but that each and every one of you will also get to know one another for possible future collaborations. Best regards, fRED and ilan Posted on: octobre 5th, 2012 by madmapperteamadmin. WHAT IS MAPPATHON? Mappathon teaches participants the latest technology for mapping video projections on physical surfaces, moving away from the traditional confines of the screen to sculptures and building facades.
The goal of the workshop is to create several projection mapping installations in REVERSE Space, where the participants create content for complex surfaces. Participants will learn the tools to work in with these forms, and work on the process of collaborative design. The primary tool taught in the workshop is the software package MadMapper.
MadMapper has greatly simplified the process of working with this technique of video projection. Used in conjunction with video software like Modul8, Quartz Composer, Processing, or Max/MSP/Jitter; MadMapper enables designers and artists to realize their ideas without getting bogged down in technical details. Ten artists selected from an open call will create content for mapping onto predetermined, large objects. They will work together in teams of two, each creating the content for a piece that will incorporate multiple surfaces and shapes. At the end of the workshop, the gallery will be open to the public for a presentation of the work. Selected participants will be given a fully functional, time limited, version of MadMapper & Modul8. This should be installed and activated prior to the beginning of the workshop.
Food and beverages will be provided during the workshop. PARTICIPANTS Ten artists will be selected from an open call. Selections will be made based on their previous work and presentation skills within the realm of live visual creation.
REQUIREMENTS Participants should posses a basic understanding of digital video tools and content creation. For interactive elements, it is strongly suggested that participants be familiar with a real time video compositing software or a programming environment.
TO APPLY – Your name, email address, and website. – Submit a brief (150 word max) biography. – Submit in less than 500 words a statement: describe your work, the tools you use, and how projection mapping will fit into your practice in the future. – Answer the following question as truthfully as you can: “If you were an Olympic Sport (real or imagined), which would you be, and why?” – Provide two work samples, with no more than two images or one short (. Only two months have passed since last edition of the Mapping Festival.

THE WORKSHOP HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO JULY. EXACT DATES AND TIMES PENDING. I am doing a 3 days workshop starting this Friday in Athens, Greece (May 18th, 19th and 20th). The first day is dedicated to Modul8 and the following two days are all about MadMapping with Modul8 & MadMapper.
Yes, it is very late announcement, but that’s Athens for you :-(=) We have a nice space that is part of the lovely the heart of Athens. You will need to and there is a modest fee of 33 euros. Hope to see you there! Posted on: mai 15th, 2012 by madmapperteamadmin. I am finally a bit recovered from a wild weekend in Geneva where I was privy to a GarageCUBE/1024 architecture presentation.
It started with Frz providing a broad overview of the activities of the MadMapper community since the software launched at the last edition of the Mapping Festival almost exactly a year ago. It was truly inspiring to see all of the creative works that MadMapper has allowed artists to realize. Most of these works have been posted on this blog so I’ll pass on re-mentioning them here and force you to browse through the blog instead when you are done reading this article. After this overview Frz discussed the importance of light in conjunction with projections and used this as a pretext for providing a sneak preview of the LED Mapper that is being incorporated into MadMapper. The screenshot above is your first taste of what mapping images to LED’s will be like. From a nerd point of view (I have many points of view) I thought it was cool how the resulting selection is converted from pixels into light, so that the data sent from MadMapper via an Artnet interface as low latency data that activates the LED lights. After Frz finished talking Boris stepped in and demonstrated how easy it is to have Modul8 be a part of this LED lighting magic.
Nothing is changed in Modul8 for this to happen. What is exciting and cool about this is that if you can gain access to the stage lighting rig, you don’t have to worry anymore if the lighting operator does not want to coordinate with you on color schemes.
Or if you are a lighting designer you can forgo some of the weird DMX desktop software I have seen and use Modul8 and MadMapper instead. For those of you needing more media about this event so you can triple analyze the movements of the creators in order extract subliminal meanings, this will have to wait until the end of the festival when the documentation crew have a chance to start editing and disseminating. There is still quite a bit of development that needs to occur before any formal announcements are made about availability however my best educated guess would be that the goal is to get this out by the end of this year. For now I am off to Athens to conduct a mapping workshop at the. Posted on: avril 30th, 2012 by madmapperteamadmin. We pleased to announce the release of MadMapper v1.2.

Best beans, The / Teams Posted on: avril 14th, 2012 by madmapperteamadmin. Tardy remains one of the few artist working in this medium that almost always leaves me breathless when he designs an installation for a performance. I could surmise that the reason for this is because he always starts with an underlying concept that dictates the form and the resulting projection material, creating a truly unified experience. But I could also come to the conclusion that he just has that special touch that is distinctly Romain Tardy and that the former formula only works magic when he utilizes it. Due to his using MadMapper on this project he was kind enough to let me be the first to post it this video. This project is the result of a “new collaboration with my friend Squeaky Lobster.
Pieces is a work in progress made of 5 steps, and the structure will change for each new step, but will be built with the same square modules. Each step will be shown only a couple of times to keep this idea of a “versatile” project (sounds a bit strange in french – as it may sound in english as well – but I like the idea of an “unstable” shape/structure).” Posted on: mars 28th, 2012 by madmapperteamadmin.
It’s up and ready to go, for all to read. The program for the 8th edition of the Mapping Festival has been posted to the Mapping Festival.
Probably of paramount importance on this blog is that there will be a MadMapping workshop during the festival. I know for sure that it will not be me because I will be flying down to the to conduct a MadMapping workshop there.
Solid information about that pending as well. We’ll have it up for sure at least a month prior to the date. Re: the design of these festivals, it seems that white on black is the new black?
If you can swing going to Geneva for the workshop you will also get to see some very fine installations. I think Joanie Lemercier’s (AntiVJ/FR) will be an incredibly nice piece of inspiration to go hand in hand with a workshop. And if the dates match up and you are a live drawing freak, the workshop is also something that would be high on my list if I were there.
I actually will be at the festival in the very beginning for the Secret Release party. But being that it is a secret I have already written too much. Posted on: mars 19th, 2012 by madmapperteamadmin. It’s more then just learning software.

Boris and I have been invited to New York to do a presentation and workshop as part of the week of activities leading up to the Bring To Light festival.
Monday, September 26th – 7pm (FREE) An hour-long lecture about GarageCUBE software, and MadMapper will take place at 113 E. 2nd Street between First Avenue and Avenue A, downstairs entrance. See you there!
1 Modul8 and Mapping – September 27th, 4-7pm ($80) The first workshop will give an overview of the Modul8 software, delving into how to use this industry-standard non-linear presentation tool, as well as the basics of MadMapper. If you’re familiar with Modul8, you will have an opportunity to push your skills; if you’re just starting out, you’ll get expert advice from the people that wrote the industry-standard of non-linear compositing and editing effect software. In addition, the projection mapping software that runs parallel to Modul8, MadMapper, will be introduced. Requirements – Mac OS X based computer running 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or greater – VGA adapter that you can use with your computer Participants are encouraged to download the software before the workshop, and we ask that participants have prior experience in video instalation and/or video performance. This will make it a lot easier to focus on the mapping aspect of the software during the workshop rather than technical assistance.
2 Mapping with MadMapper – September 27th, 8-11pm ($80) The second workshop will present the MadMapper tool, allowing participants to map on numerous challenging surfaces. Mapping isn’t just for squares any more; GarageCube will be presenting their multi-map and bezier functions in the upcoming MadMapper release. Participants are encouraged to download the software before the workshop., and have some prior experience using a VJ software. This workshop will tackle advanced mapping concepts, including multiple maps, the Spacial Scanner, and the cross-application framework, Syphon. Presented by Boris and Ilan from GarageCUBE. Requirements – Mac OS X based computer running 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or greater – VGA adapter that you can use with your computer Participants are encouraged to download the software before the workshop, and we ask that participants have prior experience in video instalation and/or video performance. Yesterday we made our first public presentation of an alpha version of MadMapper, a real time video mapping tool. The tool allows you to map video projections to physical surfaces in real time.
The MadMapper was presented by Frz of and Boris as part of one of the workshops held by in Budapest. Frz and I spent the earlier part of the day setting up the boxes. He quickly made a simple QuartzComposer setup to test things out and then I stepped in for a bit to try it out myself.
The presentation was short, starting with a smaller projector to show how the interface worked and then showing how the software worked. Boris demonstrated how Modul8 works with the MadMapper and then everyone was provided with a limited version of the MadMapper in its current state so they could try it out themselves in three different places in the empty apartment building provided by the festival, including the court yard. Here is a breakdown of the current features: – Real time mapping using ‘quads’ with four corners – Infinite ‘quads’ – Will work with one output or a triple or dual head2go. – Usable with any live video performance application on Mac OS X Snow Leopard So how does it work? The interface consists of three areas, on the left edge is the layers window where you can select and re-arrange your quads. The center panel displays your video application output where you select regions of your output to be mapped into the quads.
The right side is for deforming the quads to fit whatever surfaces you want to map. Despite the software being in an alpha state, it performed very smoothly no matter how many quads I added. Having used Perspective transform in its various forms through the years and then recently the MapMapMap module, this was a whole other level. Being able to see results immediately, not just on the surfaces of the objects I was mapping, but also within the application itself made the whole process a lot of fun.
I was able to use existing material within Modul8 and arrange them as textures. For the moment we still have a long way to go with this tool. I am not at liberty to provide details about the additional features planned and timeline for the release.
What we do know is that based on the reaction of the attendees we have something simple and very useful that we are really excited to work on. I recall a very similar type of excitement when I first started using Modul8. Photos are available on our flickr account.
